The Bird-Dog - Not a Superman

Below is an image of someone performing the bird-dog position, however it is not a perfect example, whilst not far off. I'd be pleased to coach you into the correct position to help you strengthen your back extensor muscles without creating undue load and over-extension of the lower back which does happen in the superman position. There is also a modified bird-dog for those who struggle to achieve the bird-dog on the floor.

Whilst a good example of the bird-dog, ideally the leg extended to the rear should not be so elevated and the toes should point to the floor.

Please do not try exercises in the images provided or those described anywhere on this website without first completing your PAR-Q and Client Screening Questionnaire to ensure you don't have any 'red flags', we have confirmed that you are able to engage in an exercise programme and that we can ensure that any exercises are appropriate for you and your technique is correct.

We look forward to hearing from you, discussing the specific low back pain you are experiencing and designing an exercise programme that aims to alleviate your discomfort and enables you to manage your low back condition with confidence.

A better back = a better you.
